Overhead Die Cutting Capabilities

From larger tape die cuts to flexible materials like silicone and other solid, foam and sponge materials, learn what our press can do for you.

Overhead Die Cutting

Overhead die cutting is a versatile converting process. For Viadon, we most often use it to convert tape materials too large for our other die cutting equipment, as well as elastomer (rubber-like) solids, foams and sponges that are best cut via this process. With a press rated for 25 tons, Viadon can die cut other materials too – though our focus tends towards large tape circles or other shapes, and silicone foams and sponges for aerospace parts and other gasket type applications.

The process is straightforward – a flexible or material to be cut is placed on the cutting pad, then the die is placed on the material. The die itself is supported by foam pads around the blades of the die itself. Then the overhead anvil of press is operated to meet and press down on the tool, which forces the blade shape through the material to be cut, leaving an exact shape* every time.

*Note that certain thicker materials do not always cut straight/cleanly along the edges due to compression of the material as the press pushes the die downwards.

Types of material that can be cut with our overhead press:

  • Rubber
  • Foil
  • Cloth
  • Paper
  • Fiberboard
  • Cardboard
  • Plastics
  • Tape
  • Foam
  • Leather
