during the process as well as dyes sometimes used in this process.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>What masking will work best for you?\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch3>\u003Cstrong>Stock Caps and Plugs\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\u003Cp>Starting with an easier aspect of masking, \u003Cstrong>caps and plugs work very well for masking holes, studs and pins in aluminum parts that are anodized\u003C/strong>. Both silicone and EPDM rubber are excellent materials for this. Silicone can be either clear or colored, and because it is cured, will not leach into Type II or Type III anodizing tanks with sulfuric acid baths. In such cases, \u003Cstrong>anodizers may use wax or UV-cured liquid to apply a maskant to parts\u003C/strong>. (Viadon does not carry wax or liquid masking products.) In these cases, \u003Cstrong>Viadon may assist with custom tape die cuts or molded plugs/caps\u003C/strong> that save time and money.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>See photo above where a steel insert was placed inside an aluminum part and had to be masked so the sulfuric acid would not attack the steel during anodizing. The originally-attempted paint on masking was inconsistent and had poor line definition. \u003Cstrong>Viadon’s custom masking was not only faster to apply, it provided a clean, sharp masking line\u003C/strong> that the customer appreciated and in turn had \u003Cstrong>zero defects going forward. \u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Ch3>\u003Cstrong>Type II Anodizing Tapes\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\n\n\u003Cp>Utilizing appropriate masking tapes is a great way to stop off anodizing on flat/machined surfaces. But there is a secret to successful masking with tape during anodizing: \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>Pressure!\u003C/em>\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>This is why: All the adhesive tapes we carry have what are called \u003Cstrong>pressure sensitive adhesives\u003C/strong>. That “sticky” part of the tape requires some application of pressure to activate the adhesive. Ideally,\u003Cstrong> 24 hours is best\u003C/strong>, but some anodizers have success with as little as 8 or 12 hours. This provides the necessary stop off for anodizing as it seals off not just the surface but the first few layers of aluminum below the surface – right where anodizing occurs within the metal. \u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>Below are several popular tapes used in anodizing. All our anodizing tapes use \u003Cstrong>pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA)\u003C/strong>. For a leak-proof seal, apply firm pressure (using a roller or squeegee) and allow tape to \u003Cstrong>dwell on the part for 12 to 24 hours\u003C/strong> before anodizing. This "dwell time" allows the adhesive to flow into the microscopic crevices of the metal, creating full stop-off that prevents the acid from "wicking" under the edge.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Can I use EPDM plugs in a sulfuric acid bath?\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>Yes, EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) and Silicone rubber masking caps & plugs are both highly compatible with the sulfuric acid baths used in \u003Cstrong>Type II and Type III (Hardcoat) anodizing\u003C/strong>. EPDM is often a more cost-effective alternative to silicone and offers excellent chemical resistance.\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>What tape is best for Chromic Acid (Type I) anodizing?\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\n\n\u003Cp>Chromic acid is a much harsher environment than sulfuric acid, and standard polyester tapes often fail. For Type I processes, Viadon recommend \u003Ca href=\"/products/specialty-products/3m-8985l-anodization-masking-tape\" target=\"_blank\">3M 8985L Purple Anodization Tape\u003C/a>.
