How to Identify and Size TAPERED Silicone Plugs for Powder Coating, Anodizing, and E-Coating

Quick Guide: How to Match an Unknown Masking Plug To find the exact Viadon part number for a plug on your shop floor, follow these steps:

  1. Print the Chart: Download the 1:1 scale PDF below.

  2. Verify Scale: Check the 6-inch ruler at the bottom of the printout with a physical ruler to ensure "No Scaling" was applied while printing.

  3. Physical Match: Place your unknown plug directly onto the silhouettes. Match the Top Diameter and Bottom Diameter to find your part number.

  4. Select by Hole Size: For new projects, choose a plug where the hole diameter falls between 1/3 to 2/3 of the plugs taper - ideally aiming for the halfway mark for the best seal. Buy Silicone Tapered Plugs here.

Helpful hint: Use the top and bottom diameters to determine the width of each end of the tapered masking plug; only use the side view to determine length. Check out this video for how to use these sheets to quickly identify the right tapered plug for your needs:

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are these plugs suitable for ear stretching or jewelry? A: No. These are industrial-grade masking products specifically designed for high-temperature finishing processes like powder coating, ecoating, anodizing and plating. They are not suitable for medical or personal use.

Q: What is the temperature rating for these tapered plugs? A: Our silicone tapered plugs are designed for industrial ovens, resisting temperatures up to 600°F (315°C), making them ideal for powder coating and e-coating cycles. Buy Silicone Tapered Plugs here.

Q: How do I choose a plug for a threaded hole (Tapped Hole)? A: For threaded holes, we recommend choosing a plug where the major diameter of the thread falls between 1/3 to 2/3 the plug's top and bottom diameters. This ensures the plug "bites" into the threads for a secure mask. For known thread sizes, see Viadon's Threaded Holes Masking Plugs Chart.

Q: Can these plugs be reused in chemical baths? A: Yes. These silicone plugs are specifically engineered for chemical resistance in anodizing, electroplating, and acid washing environments.
