Polyimide Tape
A perfect option for high heat masking tape
High temperature polyimide tape is a great way to save time and money when masking.
True, it is not an inexpensive tape. So how does it save time & money?
Because it withstands up to 500F it excels where other tapes can fail. Have you ever had to remove adhesive that failed in a high temp environment? That's not fun.
Or, when polyester tapes shrink due to a cure oven set higher or a part stuck in an oven "hot spot" - polyimide film tape does not shrink.
Don't get dragged
A perfect example of that is masking large open areas - such as an "box" type part (think of the underside a car's valve cover) - where the tape is adhered around the edge, but in the middle is unsupported and not stuck to anything.
It's in that middle area that polyester tapes - particularly lower quality ones - can cause big headaches for you by shrinking. Why is that a problem? Because they start to shrink right around the time a powder coating application starts to "gel".
That's at the point where the edge of shrinking tape drags partially cured powder across the part around the perimeter that should have stayed covered - but the tape creeps in because the inner area of tape shrunk. That exposes the masked surface at the edge, and the "gelled" powder pulls across that now-bare metal. And suddenly there's stringy, cured powder around the border that should have stayed clean/masked.
That's REWORK (i.e. - time + money) for you, right? Not good!
Quality saves time & labor
While it is not cheap, polyimide masking tape saves you that rework, because it does not shrink in those situations (provided it's done within temperature tolerance of 500F maximum). And in the long run, that saves money - we have lots of customers who do exactly that. They know. Now you do.
As a polyimide tape supplier, Viadon's products are some of highest quality ones available: Made by St. Gobain. While that may not be a household brand name for most people, they are well known as an internationally-recognized leader in all kinds of materials used by the biggest companies you probably do know - think of any major aerospace or well-known military contractor. There's a good chance they're using a St. Gobain product - or products - in what they make, or used in their processes for making parts.
